Taxis use SMS to know where and when they are needed

The Institut Metropolità del Taxi will inform taxi drivers where to pick up passengers by means of a text messages sent to each driver.
Because of recent high taxi demand at certain times during the day and in certain high traffic areas, the Institut Metropolità del Taxi (IMT) has launched a new formula to inform taxi drivers where they are needed. By sending a text message to each cab driver with the information, passengers will not lose their patience trying to find a cab in certain busy city areas. Almost 40% of the company’s cab drivers – that is about 4.000 taxi drivers- have already agreed with the idea.
President of the IMT, Francesc Narváez, admitted yesterday during the launching of this new communication formula that “cab drivers not always have the information of what is actually happening the city at certain times. Now with this system, they will be notified as to where and when they are mostly needed”. This formula is simple to use, direct and immediate. Cab drivers are informed from the central offices of the IMT where they are needed. “In certain cases – stated Narváez- this information will be provided ahead of time. For example, a cab drive will be notified that his service is needed in ten minutes at the Palau Sant Jordi where a concert has just ended or a musical respresentation at the Auditori has just concluded. The cab driver, that at that time, may be circulating around the city, will be notified prior to the conclusión of the event, so he can be there on time to pick up customers. If for any reason, the cab driver is not informed ahead of time of where he is needed, just by sending a text message to him, he can be there in a matter of minutes”. “The IMT – explained Francesc Narváez- knows what is happening in the city”.
The implantion of this new communication system will bring good results and for several reasons, one of them, is that, according IMT data, “75 per cent of cab drivers, always carry their cell phones with them, so the can be reached, at any time”. This formula “will cost nothing to cab drivers, since, receiving a text message is free”. And the Institut Metropolità del Taxi knows which are the cab driver’s preferred areas, making it easier to reach that certain driver for a certain area.
In order to gather as much information as possible as to where the taxi demand is higher, the IMT is negotiating with the Barcelona Port Authority (who is able to inform about the arrival of cruise ships or ferries that come in from the Balearic Islands or Italy), with the Fira de Barcelona, the Auditori or BSM, and the municipal entity who manages open spaces in the city, such as the Fòrum, the zoo, the Tibidabo, the Palau Sant Jordi or the Estadi Olímpic.
The first data received by the IMT, is that 4.000 taxi drivers out of 11.200, have agreed to use this communication system. The company in charge of providing this service is SITmobile, who has already worked with other entities such as Futbol Club Barcelona.

Sant Cugat will be able to follow electoral participation by SMS

The City Hall of Sant Cugat del Vallès (CiU and ERC) have began a new initiative using SMS in the electoral process. It’s objective is to learn the percentage of voting participation during the next municipal elections May 27th. At the same time, the data will be added on to the City Hall’s web page.
Each electoral desk, will send an SMS with information such as, number of citizens that have voted from each delegation. All this data will be managed by SITmobile, from a central platform, allowing the automatic update of the City Hall’s web page. SITmobile began in 2001 and is now hotplayer in text messaging with over 65 million SMS’s sent in Spain during 2006. SITmobile has generated over five million euros in revenues.
For the first time, Sant Cugat’s Town Hall offers citizens the possibility of checking the elections in real time, by means of an SMS. Cell phone users can send a text message to learn if they are listed in the city census bureau, if they are, they in turn receive information as to where to vote. In order to use this service, citizens must send an SMS to 5870, typing the word CENS followed by a space and then their ID number. The cost of each message is 0,15 euros, plus VAT.
Marta Subirà, states: “It’s been a while since we began using SMS, and so far, have had a good respons from citizens. Our intention is to expand the service to different municipal areas, but always by the citizens request”.

- Taxi drivers are informed during trade shows of the need of their services by means of an alert sent to their respective mobile phones. The service was activated by SITmobile during the month of March and it is currently being used by the Taxi Metropolitan Institute of Barcelona.
Barcelona, May, 15th, 2007. – During 13th thru 19th May, the Taxi Metropolitan Institute of Barcelona will send a total of 57,177 SMS to all taxi drivers informing them of the need to send taxis during rush hours to the “Construmat Trade Show”. All taxi drivers in active-duty in the areas of Montjuic and Gran Vía, who have registered into this service shall receive a daily SMS reminder. May 13th, a reminder of the opening and a schedule of the trade show was sent to all active-duty taxi drivers. The service, provided by the top leader company SITmobile, began last March and its objective is to handle all useful corporate and administrative information susceptible to affect the group´s daily activity, and also to help improve the taxi supply in those areas of higher demand. In order to maximize the service, the Taxi Metropolitan Institute of Barcelona has extended an invitation to “Fira of Barcelona” to participate in this initiative and coordinate with them all events that take place in the city. It has also extended invitations to: Port of Barcelona, Auditori and BSM, a municipal management company of large city public spaces (Fòrum, Palau Sant Jordi, etc.).

- The trade show was visited by the most relevant companies of the sector.
14th, May 2007. – SITmobile participated at the “EU-India ICT Workshop” which took place 16-18th May in Bangalore, India. Several representatives of the different European Chambers of Commerce of India attended the event. Martin Méndez, Director of Innovation of SITmobile states that “the appearance of new technologies is due to intensive research in cities where greater development exists, which is without doubt, the region of Bangalore, India. For this reason, SITmobile operates in India with a local partner”. Sitmobile has looked for new opportunities in India to expand its business. The company, that develops software and leads communication by SMS, maintains an alliance with a local partner in Bangalore.

14 of May 2007. – L´Ajuntament de Sant Cugat del Vallès has started a pioneering initiative i SMS uses. The aim is to be able to know the percentatge of participation of the citizens in the municipal elections of the 27th of May, so that, during the voting day, in real time, there will be information of the participation in the web page.

April, 19th, 2007, in Barcelona. – SITmobile has broken a new record: last April 12th, the company sent over 1.000.000 SMS. SITmobile is leader in SMS message volume. The company closed its third 2006 quarter with over 65 million SMS messages sent in Spain, the record demonstrates the company´s rapid growth and its consolidation in the sector. Marc Bonavia, Marketing Director of SITmobile, states that “the million SMS figure graphically represents our high bet in the service that every day more clients trust as a way of communicating with its target customer”. SITmobile anticipates to end 2007 with a 50% growth in SMS message sending over 2006.

Barcelona, April, 4th, 2007. – Marc Operator, official Vodafone distributor, launches a new way of advertisement in its shops using Bluetooth technology. Their aim is to contact its potential clients through mobile phones. SITmobile, SMS leader company, will implant and manage this innovating system which has already been tested at a Vodafone shop in Sant Gaietà Street, City of Terrassa, Barcelona. If the campaign works, the project will be implemented to the rest of Marc Operator shops in Terrassa and in the province of Barcelona. The project consists in installing a network of emitting devices of data at all Vodafone shops that deal with Marc Operator distributors. These devices allow the company to send promotions to potential customers mobile phones that are within a radius of 35 mts of distance of the store. The operation is simple and easy to use. The first step consists of installing a Bluetooth device at each store. The device detects all mobile phones in the surrounding area with its wireless function activated. Once the device detects an activated mobile phone, it automatically sends a message soliciting permission to download advertising. If the user accepts, a GIF file downloads along with a self explanatory promotion animation. If the user is not interested, and does not accept, the downloading does not take place and the system never asks again. Besides being an innovative marketing campaign, it means added value to Marc Operator since the company is able to contact potential clients by promoting their in shop products via mobile phones. SITmobile is aware of the advances in mobile technology and knows how to implant and manage them. Among these solutions, Bluetooth technology is its best bet. All SITmobile projects are based in finding intelligent ways to send messages, avoiding non desired publicity.
